ING Bank Romania reports net profit increased by 4.8% in H1 2025

In the first six months of 2025, the bank’s assets increased by 11%, reaching RON 79 billion, while net profit increased by 4.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. ING Bank Romania continued to finance the transition to a green economy through its lending strategy, recording 39.5% of total mortgage lending as sustainable loans. At the same time, in the corporate segment, the bank mobilized funds amounting to approximately EUR 110 million for sustainable financing in the first half of 2025.
“The first part of 2025 has been associated with a high level of uncertainty, but our customers are showing resilience and consistency, which is reflected in the growth of the bank’s assets and our performance metrics. We remain the same committed player in the Romanian economy and a long-distance partner for our clients, weathering economic cycles together.
This year we are completing an extensive accessibility project, offering services and products adapted to people with disabilities, including notch cards, digital solutions and accessible branches with dedicated ATMs, tactile route, ramps and Braille signage. Last but not least, we are working intensively on the various types of RoPay services, the first of which has already been launched in the first half of the year, namely payment by scanning a QR code with ING Home’Bank. RoPay is the first national instant mobile payments service available in Romania,” says Mihaela Bitu, CEO ING Bank Romania.
The loan portfolio grew by 17.2% (reaching RON 45.9 billion) in the first six months of 2025, compared to the first half of last year, while the value of deposits attracted from customers reached RON 68.8 billion (up 11% compared to the first half of 2024). The impact of the uncertainties in the first half of the year was reflected in the increase in provisioning costs to RON 46.7 billion (32.1% more than in 2024) and in the increase in operating expenses by 46.1%.
At the same time, the amount of taxes paid increased by 10.6%. Nonetheless, operating profit increased by 6.7%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the decisions taken and the healthy growth of the bank.
In the large companies segment, ING Bank Romania participated in a syndicated financing of RON 3.1 billion for Electrica S.A. The funds will be used for investments and refinancing, part of Electrica’s strategy of financial consolidation and support for investments in renewable energy.
RoPay, the national instant mobile payments service developed by TRANSFOND and implemented by banks on the Romanian market, has started to be seen in ING’s portfolio of services. ING Bank Romania customers can instantly pay or transfer money to other individuals by scanning a QR code generated by the beneficiary, from the ING Home’Bank mobile application. As more merchants sign up for RoPay, ING customers will be able to make contactless, online or utility payments without using bank or card details.
From June, ING Bank offers new products and services for people with disabilities, including special cards, digital solutions and accessible branches. More than 100 ING offices are accessible to people with visual or locomotor disabilities, and two branches in Bucharest are fully adapted with ramps, Braille signage, tactile route and dedicated ATMs. By the end of the year, ING aims to have accessible ATMs for the disabled community in every office. Over 16,000 notch cards have also been issued for the visually impaired.
This year, ING also launched the Security Kit, a feature in the ING Home’Bank mobile app that allows users to strengthen their protection against online fraud. For example, customers can mark their device as trustworthy or enable biometric authentication for in-app access and transaction authorization via fingerprint or facial recognition. Geolocation, one of the most popular options in the kit, can automatically block suspicious transactions made from countries other than the user’s home country using the phone’s GPS coordinates. Since the geolocation service was launched at the beginning of last year, 500,000 customers have activated the feature.
ING has committed a total of €5 million in projects for financial education, a healthier environment and better civic communities in the first half of 2025.
The Environmental Platform for Bucharest, one of the largest community initiatives supported by ING Bank since its inception, successfully completed new phases of the “In YOUR ZONE” project in Bucharest and Cluj. Funds went to micro-communities that proposed initiatives on circular economy, plastic reduction, biodiversity and urban gardens, to community meetings and mobility.
Also in the area of civic engagement, ING supported the Gen, News Civic Caravan, a project that reached 8 cities across the country and brought together over 400 young people. The Caravan provided an opportunity to debate the needs of local communities: more accessible and greener cities, better public transport, friendly and safe public spaces, support for people with disabilities and more dialogue with authorities.
Education and financial health projects remain priorities for ING Bank. Together with the National Parents Federation, ING employee volunteers have become financial education teachers for almost 10,000 students in 60 high schools in 22 cities. The Narada project has produced changes in the lives of more than 100 students in six schools across the country, and Banometru has contributed to helping 7,600 Romanians change their financial habits in 2025.
Supporting communities is also done with the help of technology. Through the “Donate in Home’Bank” campaign, ING Bank Romania’s customers donated EUR 77,900 over Easter through 3,000 transactions, and the bank doubled this amount to support communities. In total, more than EUR 115,000 was raised for causes such as supporting vulnerable groups and projects in health, education and environmental initiatives.
