Parliament: Opposition tables censure motion

The censure motion initiated by the Opposition against the Dancila Government, was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. A calendar for the vote is set to be established on Wednesday. An initial decision should have been taken on Tuesday, but was postponed because of lack of quorum.

The motion, entitled "In order to rebuild Romania, the Dancila Government must be urgently dismissed!" has 237 signatures from the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), People's Movement Party (PMP), PRO Romania, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), the national minorities, but also from former PSD MPs.

"The motion is signed by 237 MPs from PNL, USR, PMP, UDMR, PRO Romania, ALDE, two deputies of the national minorities, four PSD parliamentarians and one independent deputy. For all the arrogance, all the incompetence and all the wickedness with which they ruled, the vote for the fall of this deeply anti-national government is a necessary act on the part of any good-faith parliamentarian. The signatures confirm the commitment of a parliamentary majority to dismissing this government," PNL First Deputy Chair Raluca Turcan wrote on Facebook, immediately after the submission of the censure motion.

She maintains that the Executive "is making desperate efforts and putting pressure of all kinds to sway some of the motion signatories."

"It is for everyone a test of character and loyalty to the Romanians. It is either or! With every hour, with every passing day, maintaining the Dancila Government increasingly harms Romania. It governs in chaos, illegitimately and immorally, with an incompetence that wreaks havoc. (...) The country's interests must prevail. And Romania's interests dictate the urgent departure of the worst government in the history of the country. Now the decisions are being made. Now you can see who is a politician and a true statesman and who is a Pharisee political activist," said Raluca Turcan.

As many as 233 votes are required for the censure motion to be adopted by Parliament.

The Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, in a joint sitting, may withdraw the confidence granted to the Government by adopting a censure motion, with the vote of the majority of the deputies and senators. The censure motion is debated after three days from the date it was presented in the joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament.

În turn,  Prime Minister Viorica Dancila reaffirmed on Tuesday that the censure motion will not be adopted by the Parliament and emphasized that those Social Democrat MPs who vote "for" means they betray the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

"I reaffirm what I said yesterday: the motion will not pass, but of course that this is the conjugated effort of all the colleagues in the PSD", said Viorica Dancila, at the end of the PSD's Executive Committee meeting.

When asked if the Social Democrat MPs that vote for the censure motion will be excluded from the party, she said "Those who vote for the censure motion means they are betraying the PSD, they betray the efforts of all party colleagues, they betray the hopes of mayors who want to implement the projects with which they came to the electorate, they betray the stability of this country and I believe that this cannot be overlooked."
