Infrastructure : Romania has 26,860 km of cobblestone, dirt roads and only 866 km of motorways, in 2019

  • At the end of 2019, the length of the motorways had increased by 5.2%, namely by 43 km, compared to the end of 2018.

  • The electrified railways accounted for 37.4% of the railway network in use at the end of 2019.

On 31.XII.2019, the public roads amounted to 86391 km, out of which 17873 km (20.7%) national roads, 35083 km (40.6%) county roads and 33435 km (38.7%) communal roads.

From the point of view of the pavement, the structure of the public road network indicated the following: 38166 km (44.2%) modernized roads (out of which 92.8% were modernized roads with hard and medium asphalt cover), 21365 km (24.7%) light cover roads and 26860 km (31.1%) stone and ground roads.

As to the technical status of the public roads, 35.1% of the modernized roads length and 43.1% of the light cover roads had exceeded the service life.

Out of the total national roads, 34.6% (6176 km) were European roads, 4.8% (866 km) were motorways, and, as regards the number of traffic lanes, 10.8% (1923 km) were 4 traffic lane roads, 1.6% (290 km) were 3 traffic lane roads and 0.2% (35 km) were 6 traffic lane roads. A share of 42.3% of the county roads length were modernized roads and 37.0% of the communal roads were stone covered roads.

On 31.XII.2019, the railways for public traffic in use amounted to 10759 km, out of which 10621 km (98.7%) were normal gauge railways, 134 km (1.3%) broad gauge railways and 4 km narrow gauge railways.

The density of the railways per 1000 km2 territory was 45.1‰. The highest densities were reported in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (154.7‰), in the West region (58.9‰), in the South-East region (48.8‰) and in the North-West region (48.7‰).

On the same date, the simple length of the electrified railways in use was 4029 km, representing 37.4% of the railway network in use.
