Surplus of 216 mln euros in current account of balance of payment in January

The current account of the balance of payments registered a surplus of 216 million euros in the first month of this year, lower than the surplus of 258 million euros recorded in January 2017, shows the data made public on Friday by the National Bank of Romania (BNR).

"In the structure, the balance of goods recorded a deficit of 169 million euros, while the balance of secondary revenues, the balance of primary revenues and the balance of services increased by 69 million euros, 55 million euros and 3 million euros respectively," BNR informs.

In January 2018, total foreign debt went down by 651 million euros. Long-term foreign debt totaled 67.687 billion euros on January 31, 2018 (72.5 percent of total foreign debt), down 1.6% on December 31, 2017. Short-term foreign debt increased, but, that 1.7%, up to 25.616 billion euros (27.5% of the total foreign debt).

The long-term foreign debt service rate was 13.8% in January 2018, compared with 20.4% in 2017. The coverage of imports of goods and services on January 31, 2018 was 5.5 months from 5.4 months on December 31, 2017. The short-term foreign debt coverage, calculated at the residual value, with the foreign exchange reserves at the BNR on January 31, 2018 was 83.5%, compared with 86.4% on December 31, 2017.

Last year, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of more than 6.464 billion euros, up 84.79% compared to the previous year.
