Lazea, BNR – banks and the Romanians have already forgotten the lessons of the crisis
The banks in Romania and their clients have already forgotten the lessons of the crisis and have started over the last six months to give loans in euro, the head economist of the Central bank, BNR, Valentin Lazea said, informs Mediafax. « It seems that the lessons of the crisis have been easily forgotten both by the banks and the people who want loans » Lazea said, present at the forum on economic issues.
He showed that over the latest months there was a discrepency between the trend of loans in euro which is growing and the loans in lei which is decreasing. « This tendency, which favours loans in euro shows that there is a very short memory both on the part of banks and on the part of clients » the BNR official said.
On the other hand, Lazea is confident that, once with the economy which is coming back, loans and non-performing loans will be stopped by the end of the year.
BNR prepared a regulation to limit, among others the access of population to loans in another currency but the leu. The balance of loans in lei taken by the population went down this year from 35.9 billion lei to 35.4 billion lei, while the loans in euro went up by 1.4% from the equivalent of 51.9 billion lei to 52.7 billion lei. Expressed in euro, the growth is higher as the leu went up over the first seven months by 0.7%.
