EC Report: Unemployment rate in Romania 6.9 pct in 2009

The unemployment rate in Romania was 6.9 percent in 2009 (compared with 5.8 percent in 2008) and the number of unemployed in the same period - 681,000 people (compared with 576,000 people in 2008), according to the European Commission's annual report on employment in Europe, presented on Thursday in Brussels.

The document showed that Romania's total population numbered 21.484 million people last year (compared with 21.517 million people in 2008), of which 11.019 million were women and 10.465 million were men. The total number of Romanians aged between 15 and 64 years was 15.028 million people last year.

The total number of employees in Romania last year stood at 9.175 million people (compared to 9.343 million in 2008), of which 8.805 million people in the 15-64 years age category.

The highest level in terms of employment rate (73.7 percent) was recorded last year in the 25-54 years age category (with the employment rate among women in this age group having stood at 66.9 percent and among men at 80.5 percent), followed by the 20-64 age category (63.5 percent). For the 15-24 age range, the employment rate was 24.5 percent last year, Agerpres informs.

The unemployment rate among women (aged over 15) was 5.8 percent last year (compared with 4.7 percent in the previous year), and the total number of unemployed women in 2009 was 257,000 (and 206,000 in 2008). The unemployment rate among men (aged over 15) in 2009 was 7.7 percent (compared with 6.7 percent in 2008) and the total number of unemployed men stood at 424,000 last year (compared with 369,000 in the previous year).
