Commissioner Vera Jourova : we don’t want to see that Laura Codruta Kovesi is blocked in the competition for European Prosecutors’ Office

The commissionaire for justice Vera Jourova stated on Friday that she did not want that the Romanian state hinder Laura Codruta Kovesi to take part in the competition for the leadership of the European Prosecutors’ Office. She said that it is normal that investigations go on, by acknowledging the sovereignity of the state in the matter.

Present at an event which took place in the capital city,  the commissaire for justice Vera Jourova said that ‘ I don’t want to speculate (what happens if Laura Codruta Kovesi will be forbiddent to leave the country)but we don’t want to see that Laura Codruta Kovesi is forbidden the possibility to take part in the competition which is going on. This does not mean(The European Commission) that we want to stop the investigation, we acknowledge the sovereignity of the state in this matter, but from the perspective of the European competition. Laura Codruta Kovesi is the preferred candidate by the European Parliament, so she must be able to take part in the process of selection, this is what we require the government of Romania’.

At the same time, the European commissionaire said that she did not understand why the Romanian state does not offer support to prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi in the run for the leadership of the European Prosecutors’ Office, showing her surprise in connection with the positioning of Romania on the issue, aspect which, she stated, will not improve the reputation of Romania.

The Council of the European Union reiterated on Thursday its support for the nomination of the French Jean-Francois Bohnert as head European prosecutor, announced the institution, saying that the negotiations could be transferred to the next legislation of the European Parliament.

European Commissioner for Justice Vera Jourova also said on Friday in Bucharest that the triggering of Article 7 on Romania, meaning the suspension of the voting rights in European parliament, depends on what happens in the next period.

Asked by the journalists about the European Commission reaction if the Government adopts the emergency ordinances to amend the laws of justice, Vera Jourova said: “I will not speculate on this issue, Mr. Timmermans was clear yesterday that we want to see positive results of the dialogue. For us the two ordinances are steps towards a very wrong direction and we are waiting for reactions from the Government, with the hope the Government will return to the normal path, which was very positive and successful in the past ten years. I won’t speculate on the next steps, but a reaction will exist,” Jourova said, rfi.ro informs.

Asked about Article 7, the European Commissioner said “not yet, but it may be a decision, we did not hesitate to trigger it against Poland. We need further discussions and it depends on what will take place in Romania in the coming days.”
