Commandant Birot patrol ship will stop in Constanta for 5 days


Commandant Birot will stop for five days in Constanta Port over May 13-17, according to a press release issued by the French Embassy in Romania on Tuesday.

The ship is in the Black Sea as part of missions carried out by the French Military Marine in the area, to prove French solidarity to its allies, to preserve navigation freedom and contribute to ensuring a stability and security climate.


The French ship's stop in Constanta Port is part of the cooperation between French and Romanian naval forces and develop the series of bilateral actions, through exchanges of experience and expertise and through joint training. Commandant Birot has a crew of 88 sailors and is headed by captain Florentin Dhellemmes, a press release of the French Embassy in Romania shows. 


Initially conceived to fight submarines in the coast area, Commandant Birot is now a   ship able to carry out missions covering the five army strategic functions: discouraging, prevention, projection, protection and information. It is a robust, economic ship, equipped with weapons, adapted for supervision missions of air - maritime areas.


The ship participated in Harmattan and Unified Protector operations along the Libyan coast in 2011, and in many operational missions in the Mediterranean (FRONTEX/TRITON  and SOPHIA) and in the Black Sea or along the West African coast and the Atlantic Ocean (CORYMBE mission).
