The Romanian ruling authorities take responsibility for the policies made and never say the social problems were created by the IMF, Romanian President Traian Basescu said Thursday at the start of talks with the new IMF executive director representing the group of countries Romania is part of.Executive Director Menno Snel said there have lately been compliments from the Washington-based IMF officials with respect to the way that Romania has coped with the crisis.
'Maybe at our next meeting we'll send some of the people who are protesting in Bucharest over our successes. We take responsibility for our policies, we never say the IMF is part of them, because the IMF, actually, is our partner and has imposed nothing. We must admit the IMF, sometimes, proposed other solutions than adopted. We do not say the social problems have been created by the IMF. It is our responsibility', Basescu stressed.
Snel underscored the IMF tries to give advice and the decisions are ultimately made by each government.'(The IMF) gives advice. It also gives money sometimes, but not this time around', said Basescu, in referring to the current precautionary agreement Romania has with the international lender.
The IMF executive said small ‘sunrays' have been seen in Europe in the last weeks and he pointed out that financial solutions are required.'The important thing is that we find solutions on the medium- and long-term in the Euro zone. It is crucial to us', the Romanian President said. Also attending the meeting at the presidential Cotroceni Palace were National Bank of Romania Governor Mugur Isarescu and the Romanian representative at the IMF Mihai Tanasescu.
