Swoboda : We should ask the government of Romania to put an end to their anti-democratic behaviour
Date: 26-01-2012
Hannes Swoboda, the leader of the Socialists and Democrats of the European Parliament considers that « it is purely and simply untrue that the opposition had required the European Union to sanction Romania ».. This statement comes after the chairman of the people’s party in the EP Joseph Daul said that « the requirements of the opposition for sanctions on the part of the European institutions are not against the government but against the Romanian people ». Hanes Swoboda said that « it is our duty to defend democracy and the right of law. The recent evolutions in Romania put under doubt these fundamental principles » a PSD press release shows. The leader of the socialist MEPs Hannes Swoboda reacts to the accusations brought about by the European People’s Party in connection to the alleged « sanctions » requested against Romania at the EP and says that it is « simply and purely untrue that the opposition asked the EU to sanction Romania ».
« I call forth the responsibility of Mr.Daul (Joseph Daul, chairman of the Group of European People’s Party , PPE ) and ask him not to accuse the opposition of this. Romania is passing through a difficult period and it is our responsibility to support the Romanian people as much as we can. That is why, I request the European Commissionaire for regional policy, Johannes Hahn to ensure that the structural funds are distributed efficiently in order to meet the real needs of the people » Hannes Swoboda said.
« As representatives in the EP, it is our duty to defend the democracy and the right of law. The recent evolutions of Romania put under doubt these fundamental principles. This is unacceptable for us, and together with the other political groups in the EP we should demand the Romanian government to put an end to anti-democratic behaviour » the leader continued.
