The Strategy for the Danube region was approved by the European leaders : 100 billion euro by 2013

The head of state and government in the European Union approved on Friday The Strategy regarding the Danube region and they asked « the important actors to implement it without delay » the conclusions of the Summer European Council said.

« The member states are invited to continue to work in cooperation with the commission on the possible future macro-regional strategies,especially with regard to the Adriatic and Ionian regions » the text says.

On Friday, the World Wild Fund hailed the adoption of the strategy for the Danube which relies on a financing of 100 billion euro by 2013.

The « 100 billion euro, correctly invested have the potential to make the Danube region a window of the ecologist, modern and prosperous society which is developing and protects the huge natural capital, instead of destroying it » WWF says.

The 100 billion euro necessary for this strategy have already been offered in the cohesion policy of the EU for the period 2007 – 2013.

Out of the 14 countries involved in this strategy eight – Germany, Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria are member states of the EU while six are not –Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
