Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Mevlut Cavusoglu, has invited the Romanian head of state to address the PACE session next year. President Traian Basescu on Wednesday welcomed Mevlut Cavusoglu at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, with the European official currently paying an official visit to Romania. According to a press release of the Presidential Administration to Agerpres, Traian Basescu and Mevlut Cavusoglu have agreed on the need of sustained efforts from all member states and European bodies to secure real chances of integration of the Roma people in the societies in which they live, without this to mean implementing of a policy of assimilation.
The two also brought arguments in favour of the approval and implementation of a strategy at European level on the Roma people, to enjoy, first of all, the support of all EU member states. They appreciated that the free movement of the European citizens, regardless of their ethnic origin, is a right that can not be overridden by arbitrary decisions.
Moreover, the two officials had an exchange of opinions on the upcoming elections in the Republic of Moldova and they analyzed the situation of the Romanian communities in the neighboring countries, focusing on compliance with European standards in terms of national minorities rights.
Traian Basescu hailed the efforts of the Council of Europe meant to secure the democratic ways for the states in Eastern Europe.
