No new avian flu suspicions in Tulcea

Authorities of the eastern Danube Delta county of Tulcea are saying they have not recorded any new suspicion of the avian flue in the area over the past days. 'Veterinarians continue to disinfect the households at Letea where the avian flu was recently detected and continue to monitor the bird populations that are less than 10 km way from the outbreak areas - Cardon, C.A Rosetti and Sfistofca,' Tulcea Prefect Vasile Gudu told Agerpres on Thursday.Gudu also said that according to information with the Tulcea Animal Health Directorate no domestic bird deaths have been found in private households.
In relation to the state of health of the six people from the two households where the avian flu virus was detected, doctors of the Public Health Authority say they continue to monitor it.
Late last week, four domestic fowls in two private households of the village of Letea died. Their owners announced the veterinarian of the town of Sulina, who collected samples from the fowls and reported having detected the H5N1 virus in the samples. The tests were reconfirmed on March 15 be the specialist laboratory of Bucharest, and the Tulcea officials immediately started implementing the procedures provided for in the plan for containing animal diseases.
The European Commission on March 16 confirmed the risk areas reported by the Romanian authorities in relation to the latest outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu at Letea.
