Date: 16-03-2010
The National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) are invited to consultations on a single-chamber Parliament and a cut in the MP seats, on Tuesday at 18:00 hrs, local, President Traian Basescu announced on Monday. He mentioned that the invitation is extended to the leaders of the opposition PNL and PSD who walked away from the similar consultations on Monday to protest against the presence at the talks if independent Mps. The President said he believes PNL chief Crin Antonescu and PSD chief Victor Ponta's protests are part of the 'beginner's reactions,' as they are fresh party chairmen who want to adjusts their status to the Government.'The problem is they were not at the Government House, they were at the President's because the President invited them to some consultations that regarded the national interest,' said Basescu. He pointed out that the PNL chief participated in a round of talks on November 6, 2009 where also attending was the group of independent Mps. He argued that failing to invite a parliamentary group to political consultations with the head of state is unconstitutional. President Basescu: I do not want to impose a certain kind of Constitution
President Traian Basescu said on Monday that he did not want to impose a certain kind of Constitution as his mandate was not connected to the fundamental law.'Nobody should think that I want to impose a certain kind of Constitution. From my point of view, my mandate is not affected by the new Constitution. I am carrying out my mandate on the basis of this Constitution and this is why any approach like 'the President wants to strengthen the his power' is superfluous as I have no connection to the future Constitution,' the Head of State told the meeting with the political parties at the Cotroceni Palace.According to him, a legislative process of modernizing Romania as well as a process of decentralization connected to the Constitution are necessary.'I, for one, think that we should also consider the country's administrative reorganization, besides the obligations that are incumbent on us deriving from the process that took place in November, the referendum,' also said President Basescu.
President Traian Basescu on Monday informed the leaders of the parliamentary parties, whom he invited to consultations, that his aim was the achievement of a consensus of the political class on the modernization of the state.'My intention is for us to create a kind of dialogue that should refer to the national interest, not to the party one. My aim is for us to achieve a consensus on the third aim of the Romanian political class, after the accession to NATO and the European Union, namely the modernization of the state, which also implies considering the referendum on November 2009,' said Traian Basescu at the beginning of the meeting with he representatives of the political groups.
