Date: 12-03-2010
More than half of the Romanian employees (51.95 percent) are working overtime on a daily basis, while other 12.67 percent work overtime at least twice a week, according to the latest survey conducted by recruitment website Myjob. Only a little over one percent of the respondents (1.57 percent) said they only work overtime once a month, while 4.90 percent said they work overtime about four times a month. Moreover, as many as 28 percent of the Romanian employees will work overtime only if they are explicitly asked to.
'If we think of labour market movements in the past 18 months, the results can be explained by the large number of redundancies lately - in most cases, employees who are staying with the respective company are taking over the job of those who left too, being afraid not to be fired themselves - employees work more to ensure their current job,' said Adela Rapeanu, communication expert at Myjob. In this context, experienced employees, aged over 45, are usually those who work overtime, on daily basis (63 percent), while the percentage of young employees up to 30 working overtime account is 49.
Myjob survey was conducted online at the national level over February 19 - March 9 on a representative sample of over 4,200 respondents. Most of them - almost one third - are from Bucharest (29 percent). Most participants in the www.myjob.ro survey have higher education, completed or in progress (45 percent), while 8 percent have also a master's degree. As regards gender, 60 percent of the respondents were men and 40 percent women.
