Oxford Analytica : The attempt to make Geoana step down, a step towards the strengthening of Basescu’s power Oxford Analytica writes, in a report, about the attempt of the democrat-liberals to make Mircea Geoana step down from the leadership of the Senate, this action being considered as a new step towards the long-term objective of Traian Basescu to strengthen his personal power.

According to a short presentation of the report, entitled « Political games to distract attention from the economy” the document refers to the fact that the democrat-liberals, in power, “ lodged a motion” on 4th March to get Mircea Geoana down from the position of Speaker of the Senate. Geoana is said to have lost his position as leader of the opposition and be fighting for political survival. “The motion is another step of president Traian Basescu to his long-term objective to consolidate his personal power in spite of all parties” the report says.

The document contains reference to the first mandate of president Traian Basescu, at the constitutional reform and the electoral one, the promotion of the party division, the division of the opposition, political instability, economic risks. Victor Ponta, Mircea Geoana and Adrian Nastase referred to the Oxford analytica report as well as at the difference of approach with a similar document, published in August 2009 entitled “ The press does not play a positive political role anymore” which related about press trusts which attacked president Basescu, about the press which poisons the electoral competition, as well as about the fact that CAN is politically divided.

The leader of the group of independents in the Senate, Liviu Campeanu required on Wednesday at the opening of the plenary session of the Senate the introduction on the agenda of the request for the dismissal of Mircea Geoana as Speaker of the Senate, signed by 58 senators PDL, UDMR and independents. Geoana stated as “ inadmissible” the request as he mentioned that he will not submit to the plenary the introduction on the agenda.In exchange, the agenda was presented without the dismissal of Geoana. Later on, the plenary session was interrupted for a consultation break. Following the consultations, no conclusion was drawn.

The leader of the PDL group in the senate, Constantin Igas announced after the resumption of the meeting, that the group of democrat-liberal members of parliament propose a new agenda with the request for dismissal and the expansion of the debates until all points are covered. The interventions continued and finally, at about 13:30, the senate speaker Mircea Geoana declared the meeting closed.
