Date: 10-03-2010
Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi will visit Vienna this April to discuss the European Union Strategy for the Danube region, which is grounded in a joint Romanian-Austrian initiative, the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) reports. On Monday Baconschi approached his incoming visit at a meeting with Austrian ambassador in Bucharest Martin Eichtinger. The two officials also discussed themes on the bilateral political and economic agenda, which this year is marked by the 90th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Romania and Austria.
Baconschi and Eichtinger exchanged opinions on themes of common interest concerning the regional developments. The dynamics of the Romanian-Moldovan relationship following a recent visit by Romanian President Traian Basescu to Moldova's capital city Chisinau was one of the main topics discussed at the meeting, given the special interest Austria is attaching to this area, as ambassador Eichtinger is also accredited for Moldova.
Eichtinger is said to have underscored Austria's increased interest in the Black Sea region, quoting Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger as saying the three main global economic development areas are currently China, India and the Black Sea region.
The two officials are also reported to have discussed the unveiling in Vienna of a plaque commemorating Romanian composer George Enescu during Baconschi's visit there. The plaque would be placed on the façade of the house where the Romanian musician lived in his teens, 1888-1894.
MAE says the two officials voiced commendation for the excellent bilateral relations between Romania and Austria as well as interest in continuing to use the important potential for cooperation at its fullest.
