Cristian Preda suggests French type semi-presidential regime

Romania should have a semi-presidential regime in which the head of state can dissolve the Parliament. Here is what PDL European MP Crisitian Preda told RFI: “This semi-presidential regime I would embrace is a French type one. This supposes for instance that the president should have the right to dissolve the Chambers, as a solution which could be used in a moment of crisis, from the regime blockage”, Preda explained.

“In the same way I would introduce a mechanism such as the positive no confidence motion, which supposes, at the moment you criticize the government, bringing a replacement and arousing a more consistent and more intelligent opposition. I would also introduce a certain cabinet hierarchy level,” the PDL deputy continued.

Cristian Preda considers a serious public debate should be made so that the people should know what amending the Constitution means.“There are many things I thought about and I would be glad to have in PDL and in general between PDL and other parties in Romania, a public debate. I think we must have an ample reflection, debates within political parties and a public debate among political parties,” he declared.

“Revision is not a question of closed cabinet, of a room among whose walls there are four of five people, party representatives, negotiating in secret. There should be a very ample debate, which all citizens should know. We are making a revision for this society and we need the people’s reaction before producing it,” Cristian Preda said.President Traian Basescu invited parliamentary parties on Monday for consultations about amending the Constitution and this year’s legislative priorities.
