President Basescu starts today an official visit to Japan President Traian Basescu will pay an official visit to Japan on March 9-11 on an invitation from His Imperial Majesty Emperor Akihito, the President's Office announced on Monday. Basescu is scheduled to hold official meetings with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, with the Japanese prime minister and the speakers of the two chambers of the Japanese Diet.The Romanian president will also meet officials of the Japanese Business Federation Keidanren, he will attend the opening of the Romanian-Japanese Business Forum and meet the representatives of the Romanian community based in Tokyo.
Romanian-Japanese bilateral relations
Romania and Japan established diplomatic relations at legation level in August 1917. On April 1, 1922 the Tokyo diplomatic mission was closed because of budget-related reasons and on April 1, 1927 it was re-opened. As a consequence of the Tokyo diplomatic mission's closing, the Romanian Honorary Consulate-General in Japan, headquartered in Osaka, was established on May 1, 1923. The diplomatic relations were suspended on October 31, 1944, given that Romania switched sides and joined the anti-Nazi allies and they were re-established on September 1, 1959 at legation level.On June 1, 1964 the diplomatic relations were established at embassy level.
