Eurostat: Romania ranks 3rd in EU in terms of government deficit, in 2008 Romania ranked 3rd in terms of government deficit in the European Union, in 2008, with the figure representing the equivalent of 5.5 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), being exceeded only by Greece (7.7 percent of the GDP) and Ireland (7.2 percent), according to the revised data presented on Thursday by the European Statistics Office (Eurostat).

Compared with the first estimates, made public in April, Eurostat revised upward (from 5.4 up to 5.5 percent of the GDP) such figures referring to the government deficit of Romania in 2008.

According to the revised figures, in 2008 Romania had a government deficit worth 27.941 billion lei (compared with 27.295 billion lei estimates in April) and a deficit of 10.466 billion lei in 2007.

In exchange, Romania's situation appeared better in terms of the level of government debts as percentage of GDP (13.6 percent), being exceeded only by Estonia, with a government debt of 4.8 percent of the GDP and Luxembourg (13.5 percent). According to Eurostat, in 2008 Romania reported a government debt worth 68.532 billion lei, compared with 52.292 billion lei in 2007.According to the first estimates, made public in April, Romania ranked last but one in the European Union, being followed only by Estonia, Agerpres reports.
